Program Offers up to $18,000 to Earn an Occupational Endorsement Certificate

The College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP) encourages individuals to learn more about a new Fast-Track grant program funded by the Municipality of Anchorage to support eligible students seeking re-training to enter the workforce.

CBPP offers four qualifying programs under the program guidelines: Occupational Endorsement Certificates (OEC) in Bookkeeping, Business Analytics, Business Leadership or Entrepreneurship.

The Fast-Track program will be awarding $3.1 million from now until December 31, 2023 to residents of the Municipality of Anchorage who meet certain criteria related to unemployment or being economically disadvantaged. Students who receive funding may be awarded up to $9,000 for tuition, fees and related costs, along with up to $9,000 in living costs. This will help individuals who need to gain a new skillset to re-enter the workforce.

CBPP developed its OECs to meet the needs of the business community, and to provide students with a certification that can be applied right away in the marketplace. For example, there is high demand for bookkeepers and business leaders in the Anchorage area. The field of business analytics is experiencing tremendous growth, as the rise in big data provides insights for industries worldwide. Entrepreneurship has also experienced an uptick during the pandemic, as people think creatively about what products and services they can bring to a changing world.

鈥淭here鈥檚 no better time to explore these fields,鈥� said Terry Nelson, Associate Dean of the College. 鈥淥ur OECs can be earned in just 12 to 18 months, and the Fast-Track grant program will provide up to $18,000 in financial support. This will help eligible students focus on their studies to complete their certificate.鈥�

A certificate is a savvy step for any student, since it is 鈥渟tackable.鈥� The credits earned for an OEC can apply toward an advanced degree, like an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).

鈥淚f eligible individuals take advantage of the Fast-Track grant program now, it鈥檚 like getting half of your AAS degree paid for,鈥� Nelson said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an incredible opportunity to look to the future and see where you might be in just one or two years.鈥�

Individuals are encouraged to learn more and apply to the 鈥淔ast-Track Navigator鈥� if they believe they qualify. The Navigator will help determine eligibility.

Eligible students who want to get started next semester would need to apply to one of CBPP鈥檚 OEC programs by November 15, 2021.
