First Recipients Earn CBPP Executive Leadership Certificate

October 19, 2021

Patrick Hanrahan and Joe Tapangco are the first students to earn CBPP鈥檚 new graduate certificate in Executive Leadership, designed to strengthen leadership skills for executives and a way to achieve a competitive advantage in the workplace. CBPP offers an additional graduate certificate in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence. Each certificate can be completed with 12 graduate level credits, and the required coursework can be applied toward an MBA.

Whether you serve in a senior or executive C-suite level position or are part of a leadership team, the Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership will help you enhance and fulfill your leadership potential. You will develop skills to lead innovation and respond to evolving market demands, to improve organizational efficiency and effectiveness. You will meet the unmet need for professional development for executive business leaders in Anchorage. You can fulfill requirements for the executive leadership graduate certificate while pursuing a graduate degree, working full time, or balancing other responsibilities.

鈥 Dr. Helena S. Wisniewski,
Professor of Entrepreneurship and Chair of the Management, Marketing, Logistics and Business Analytics Department.

Patrick and Joe agreed to share their thoughts on earning this new distinction. Congratulations to them both!

Patrick Hanrahan

Patrick was born and raised in Anchorage and currently works for a local print and design shop, where he handles marketing and sales.

He was pursuing an MBA when he realized that many of the courses he had taken also applied to the new Executive Leadership certificate. He decided to complete the certificate by taking just one more course.

鈥淓arning the Executive Leadership certificate while pursuing a graduate degree is easy,鈥 Patrick said. 鈥淭he course work tied right into the MBA program. Also, the EL certificate helps build your confidence in both leadership and team building. These are invaluable skills in today鈥檚 workforce.鈥

Joe Tapangco

Joe was born and raised in Alaska. After high school, he earned an Associate of Arts in Media Arts and Bachelor of Arts in Film & Video Production. He worked on several movies in Alaska, such as Big Miracle and The Frozen Ground. During these gigs, he began specializing in production management. He later enlisted with the U.S. Army as a Mortuary Affairs Specialist to give himself a better competitive edge as a leader.

In addition, he鈥檚 been working on an MBA with a dual emphasis in Leadership and Project Management. He thought the Executive Leadership certificate would reinforce his MBA once he graduated. Joe is currently mobilized overseas on a second deployment, but was able to complete his last course from afar to finish up the Executive Leadership certificate. He highly recommends Dr. Briggs鈥 summer course, an Arctic Scenario/Simulation.

As one of the first recipients of the Executive Leadership certificate, Joe鈥檚 advice to others is that there is always something to learn. 鈥淓verything I knew before my leadership classes only became more refined once I finished. I have already implemented much of my new knowledge in the military, and it earned me a promotion to Sergeant, and into an exciting duty title for my current mobilization (Mortuary Affairs Liaison Noncommissioned Officer).鈥

Once Joe finishes his MBA, he plans to enter the corporate world in the entertainment industry.
