SON Community Advisory Board
The Advisory Board serves as a community resource and advocate for the 彩神vlll争霸 School of Nursing.
Responsibilities
- Attend scheduled meetings to hear updates and provide strategic guidance to the Director.
- Represent and promote 彩神vlll争霸 Nursing in the Alaska community.
- Identify and assist with community partnerships.
Commitment
- Be knowledgeable about the program.
- Attend meetings and participate in special assignments.
- Donate at a level that is personally meaningful.
- Participate in other activities:
- Represent the School of Nursing.
- Support recruitment.
- Attend events that honor graduates and alumni.

Deb Hansen, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CPHQ
Chief Nurse Executive, Providence Alaska Medical Center
Deb Hansen has been involved with 彩神vlll争霸 ( 彩神vlll争霸), the College of Heath, and the School of Nursing since 1998 when she first enrolled in 彩神vlll争霸 with the intent of obtaining my master鈥檚 degree and in 2010 she was invited to become a member of several boards within the College of Health and School of Nursing (SON). Deb have been a member of the 彩神vlll争霸 SON Community Advisory Board since 2012 and most recently I was elected as the Co-Chair.
She has worked as a bedside nurse in surgical ICUs, adult ICUs, NICUs, Pediatrics, and PICUs. Deb has also been involved by both role and position in performance improvement, accreditation, and peer review. She held a variety of leadership roles with the final one being the CNO of Providence Alaska Medical Center. Deb retired in 2018 and since then has volunteered within the community with several organizations, her favorites being the 彩神vlll争霸 SON, the Theta Omicron Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, and the Alaska Health Fair.
Deb believes that 彩神vlll争霸 offers a world class nursing education and her intent with sitting on this board is to advise the SON on issues important to our community and state, helping the university partner with others to leverage assets, inform policy decision-makers about nursing issues, while always encouraging students to consider nursing as a career and support fund-raising for the SON.

Stephanie Wrightsman-Birch, APRN, MPH, MSN, FNP-C
Family Nurse Practitioner- Providence Primary Care-DeBarr
Stephanie Wrightsman-Birch is currently a Family Nurse Practitioner in private practice in east Anchorage, caring for a culturally diverse population ranging in age from infancy to seniors. She is one of the founding members of the nonprofit organization, the All-Alaska Pediatric Partnership. During her 25 years on this board, she served in many roles including President, Past President and Treasurer, overseeing the development from a community coalition to a 501C (3). As a health care professional and provider, she has served in various clinical RN roles, led the development of The Children鈥檚 Hospital at Providence and served as its first Administrator for over 6 years. She also held leadership roles in the State of Alaska Public Health Division in program management and for 12 years was the Section Chief of Women鈥檚, Children鈥檚 and Family Health. She retired from state service in 2017 and now practices part time as a Family Nurse Practitioner where she has been for the last 17 years,
Her volunteer work in Alaska and nationally extends the over 42 years she has been a Registered Nurse and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, including leadership positions in professional organizations such as the March of Dimes, NAACOG, AWHONN and the Association of Maternal Child Health Programs as well as the Providence Alaska Regional Board of Directors. She currently serves on the Alaska Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Alliance, the Community Advisory Board for the 彩神vlll争霸 School of Nursing, the State of Alaska鈥檚 Maternal, Child and Infant Morbidity and Mortality Committee and the Lead Surveillance Committee. She continues to be very active in both state and federal legislative health care issues and those affecting Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and maternal child health populations.

Nathan Dahl, NHA (Certified Nursing Home Administrator)
Nathan Dahl has been a proud Alaskan for the past 30 years, embracing the rugged beauty and unique challenges of life in Alaska. A graduate of Colorado State University with a degree in Business Administration, Nathan has dedicated over two decades to the field of long-term care, where he serves as an administrator in both Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing committed to fostering quality, individualized care.
Outside of his professional life, Nathan is a devoted husband and father to three daughters. His passion for leadership extends beyond the workplace, as he coaches high school football, instilling values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience in the next generation of athletes. Nathan鈥檚 dedication to his community, family, and profession reflects his commitment to making a positive impact in every sphere of his life.
- Cathy Giessel
Cathy Giessel, MSN, RN, APRN
Majority Leader, Alaska State Senate
Cathy Giessel is a lifelong Alaska, born in the Territory of Alaska. She has a BSN from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a MSN from the University of Alaska Anchorage. She has worked as an RN and APRN in hospitals and clinics in Southcentral as well as rural Alaska.
Cathy has been a State Senator since 2011. Her committee assignments are diverse, from natural resources, judiciary, arctic topics, to healthcare. Senator Giessel served as Senate President from 2019-2020 and now fills the role of Majority Leader in the Senate Bipartisan Coalition since 2023.
She currently volunteers healthcare services in school-based clinics in the Anchorage School District and with Alaska Health Fairs. She serves on the board of directors for Alaska Behavioral Health, and on the Citizens Advisory Board to the 彩神vlll争霸 School of Nursing.
Cathy and her husband of 50 years have raised 3 children in Anchorage and now have 7 grandchildren, all of whom live in the Lower 48. They are currently raising 2 large 鈥渇ur kids鈥 who provides them with a lot of entertainment.
- Jyll Green
Jyll Green, DNP, FNP
Founder, myHealth Clinic
Dr. Jyll Green has been a family nurse practitioner for 14 years. She is a 2004 graduate of 彩神vlll争霸鈥檚 M.S.N. Family Nurse Practitioner program. In 2007, she founded myHealth Clinic, a family practice and immediate care facility, in Anchorage, Alaska that serves over 14,000 patients. She was voted Alaska Nurse Practitioner of the Year in 2012. In 2016, she received her Doctorate degree in Nursing Practice at 彩神vlll争霸 with a special project focus on using Extended Release Injectable Naltrexone to Reduce Recidivism in the State of Alaska.
Jyll enjoys mentoring nursing students and has been a preceptor for many 彩神vlll争霸 nurse practitioner students over the years. In her spare time, she enjoys training for triathlons, skiing in Girdwood, and sailing the chilly waters of Resurrection Bay with her husband Matt and her two children Anna and Kai.

- Loren Leman
Loren Leman
Owner, Loren Leman, P.E.
Loren Leman has served on the Community Advisory Board for the 彩神vlll争霸 School of Nursing for more than 15 years, chairing it for several years. He has provided consulting engineering services in Alaska over the past five decades, primarily with water, wastewater, and environmental projects. He also served concurrently for 18 years as Representative, Senator and Lieutenant Governor. Loren is the first person of Alaska Native ancestry to be elected to a statewide office in Alaska. He was raised in Ninilchik where he participated in a salmon fishing business with his family.
Loren earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, an M.S. in Civil/Environmental Engineering from Stanford University and studied Arctic Engineering at 彩神vlll争霸. In 1999 he received the national Civil Government Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers for his work in the Alaska Legislature on resource, transportation, and education issues. Mr. Leman serves on several boards and commissions for government, community service, and educational institutions. Loren and his wife Carolyn raised three children, one a 彩神vlll争霸 graduate in nursing, and are enjoying eight energetic and inquisitive grandchildren. The Lemans reside in Anchorage.

Sarah Martin is the Chief Nursing Officer at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Foundation Health Partners. A life-long Fairbanks resident, Sarah is deeply committed to the community, and specifically the healthcare environment that supports it. A nursing leader for over a decade, Sarah strives to promote exceptional care through collaboration, engagement, and robust employee support. Sarah takes pride in being rooted in the interior and the potential of improving the lives of those around her. In her spare time, she enjoys soaking up as much of the outdoors as possible with her husband, son and daughter.

Bridget Roughneen is currently the Staff Development Nurse Consultant with the State of Alaska Section of Public Health Nursing. She has over 20 years of nursing experience including as a nurse clinician, educator, and manager.
- Chelsea Ryan
Chelsea Ryan, BSN, RN
Nurse Director, Anchorage Primary Care for Southcentral Foundation
Chelsea Ryan is a lifelong Alaskan with roots in rural Alaska. She is Upper Kuskokwim Athabascan and grew up in the village of McGrath. Her primary drivers are family and community. Chelsea graduated from the 彩神vlll争霸 in 2010 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in nursing and a minor in Anthropology. Chelsea has been a nurse for 14 years and has spent her career in the Alaska Native Tribal Health System in roles ranging from an adult medical-surgical unit, outpatient case management, and nurse management and leadership. Currently, Chelsea is the Nurse Director for Anchorage Primary Care for Southcentral Foundation. Chelsea is passionate about the health and wellness of her people and increasing representation and support for diverse and underrepresented populations in health professions. Some of her most cherished titles are wife, mom, auntie, sister, and friend.
- Pam Vrenna
Pamela J Vrenna, MSN-Ed, RN, NPD-BC, PCCN
Senior Director of Education, Providence Alaska Learning Institute, Providence Alaska
Responsible for service area oversight of clinical and interprofessional education related to nurses, nursing personnel and other clinical staff members for Providence Alaska.
Director of education since December 2022. Prior to this she was the regional manager of clinical education. Her work as an educator for Providence Alaska Medical Center (PAMC) began in 2012 for the progressive and intermediate care units.
Pam spent 27 years as a bedside nurse on cardiac step-down and progressive care units in Idaho, Montana, Pennsylvania and Alaska before her transition to nursing education.
She holds a Master of Science in Nursing Education from Western Governors University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villa Maria College/Gannon University and Bachelor of Science from Mercyhurst University. Pam holds certifications in nursing professional development and progressive care.
Pam and her husband have been married for 39 years. Although they enjoy being empty nesters, they love spending time with their three adult children and five grandchildren. Pam鈥檚 hobbies also include camping, baking and kayaking.
